From time immemorial, music has been used to depict the most powerful of human emotions. During the rein of Moghuls, Maharashtra had Powadas singing the praises of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. During our mass freedom struggle, we had composers like Bankim Chandra Chatterjee pen down superb verse in the form of Vande Mataram. And for the Unknown Soldier of Kargil, Lata Mangeshkar’s mellifluous voice paid a tribute to these immortals in the song ‘Ae Mere Watan ke Logon’.

Music has always held maximum potential to aptly convey every emotion that is heartfelt. Even plants, they say, respond to music. Music therapy has long been used as an immaculate cure in natural medicine. Naturally then, placing a pun on the word SwaRajya would be justified!

Where these Swaras meet the Shoor Sardars of modern India, we call it SwarTantra.

Providing for our Providers

It is impossible to get restful sleep if you are engulfed with fear and uncertainty. Before we have to face the wrath of our neighbours, they encounter the canons in the lion’s den. Soldiers have always held our highest of respect, and their courage and will power is something everyone should emulate.

But apart from the fighting soldiers who are prepared to die at our national frontiers, it is the wounded soldiers who have not lost their lives, but their capacity to defend our borders who must be truly applauded. It is like their life’s very purpose has been rudely snatched away from them. And still they remain unyielding to these unfair blows dealt out to them.

In their bid to revive from this paralysing shock, the inmates of PRC are making undying efforts. Why not recognize this laudatory attempt then and endeavour to provide a sense of security to those who have been securing our restful sleep for us?

Never Say Die… Till It’s Over

Divide a show into three phases, and you have pre-production, production and post production. Every phase has its own share of obstacles, and every phase has its own sweet experiences. Take them all in your stride and fill your kitty with memorabilia that remains unrivaled.

Every event that is successful requires just one single mantra. ‘Never Say Die’. While we are in the process of putting together a show, the most important part of all sessions that go into the production process is brainstorming. The discussion over emptied plastic tea cups, the chalking out of strategies that are expected to work, and then scrapping them because the don’t look so good in black and white… all this gives you memories that make your show even more special.

So many times, one feels like just throwing the entire blueprint for a toss. You think, is it worth all the effort after all. I mean, why go to all these lengths to support a cause – if you want to raise funds, donate a small amount from your own treasury. It will save so much of effort. Of course, you won’t be able to reach out to fellow citizens to enlist support for your cause, but should we just give a press ad for that?

And then, we smile… we can picturize our event where all eminent artistes will be applauded by you. Somewhere, someone will comment on the co-ordination and synchronization, the concept and execution. Some of SwarTantra’s claps will be for us, and all of them will be because of us.

Just this reverie is enough to keep us going in our bid for excellence… and we sigh…

That’s our spirit of Never say Die.

Take 1… Final Cut

Life is all about taking your chances. But Life itself proffers only a single chance, more so if you are a soldier standing guard over your Motherland. You can’t stand by the wings and observe the ongoing acts as a mere spectator – there, you HAVE to take action. Lights might be dim, Cameras might make their presence felt only in flashes of fire and Action is something you might just be tired of. But you must keep moving towards victory or perish on the way, for that is your pledge to India. Only here, there are no retakes.

The soldiers of PRC remember taking this oath. Life has dealt them several blows, yet they have learnt to take them in stride. Without indefatigable courage and the burning fire to snatch a second chance from Life, they would not almost be conquering fate at the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre Kirkee. Despite meagre resources, they keep the fight alive… alive and kicking.

We are in awe of them. In fact, we are conducting SwarTantra only in their honour. But it’ not just this that can be identified as the common factor between these confident soldiers and our acclaimed performers that drew us to the idea of organising a live concert. After all, a live show is also all about delivering a superb shot in just a single take.

A Perfect 10

The New Year is here! And with what gusto! When the year changes to double digits, it does bring on a new spell of joy doesn’t it?

So, with this New Year, we make a fresh set of Resolutions. Only this time our resolution is not going to be broken. For we have resolved to take a step towards a cause that is close to our heart.

What better time of the year to decide upon a noble mission? Recognizing the immeasurable contribution of our soldiers to India, to you and me, we have made up our minds that it is now time to give back to them what they rightfully deserve. This realization brought us in touch with PRC, a home for the recuperation of the paraplegic soldiers of India.

The facility of PRC at Kirkee has international acclaim in the phenomenal work it is doing. They yearn to make every inmate able again to stand on his own feet. The provide training in vocations that can be feasibly pursued and give them an opportunity to hone their fighting spirit by encouraging them to play sports from their wheelchairs. And all this within a budgeted income from donations and grants, that are bound to fall short of meeting their requirement. What they aim to accomplish is no small feat.

What we can do for them, then, is spread a smile in their lives and try to help them meet their dearth of finances. These soldiers inspire us even when they are not on the front with their fighting spirit. A slender pillar of support at the onset of this brand new decade, on the immensely patriotic occasion of Republic Day is sure to present them with added gusto for the New Year.

Desi Tunes

The Jhankaar beats of India are all unbeatable. The north comes with its durbari tunes of Hindustani Classical notes. The south is replete with vastly different Carnatic ragas. Folk music, Light music and Semi-classical music come with their own individual popular appeal. Traditional blends with modern, Indian blends with western and time fades into oblivion, making a novel Bollywood style along the way. Such is the magic of desi tunes that it’s hard to believe there’s a single soul in our land who does not have an ear for at least one of these varied genres.

A3 Events and Continuum Solutions have created a confluence of these musical streams and present before you music that flows through the chasm of interstate borders and identities other than that of an Indian. The Modern Sutradhaar

He holds the reins of the play. He keeps it flowing steady. He fills in any role the situation demands, and he is responsible for the smoothness of event flow. Without much ado, he brings forth the show, acting as the coil that binds the show.

An anchor’s part is a pre-requisite to making a successful show. Can you imagine an eagerly awaited Awards Show without the celebrated hosts who keep the zeal alive? The Reality Show culture is at its zenith, but just imagine a day when your favourite show must go on by itself because there is no one to take the unwell anchor’s place! Immediately you find yourself missing this irreplaceable link in the chain.

In the Rajasthani folk arts, Puppet shows were immensely popular. The man who would control the movements of the puppets was termed the ‘Sutradhar’, sutra meaning threads, and dhar referring to the holder. This term has come down as a legacy to every modern concert, as truly the anchor is the one who keeps the threads of a show from tangle.

Especially in a musical performance, an anchor has a major role to play. He connects the various songs being performed and gives the audience interesting anecdotes relating to the songs. He plays with words, he brings forth the beauty of both music and lyrics. A good anchor is definitely an asset to every show.

Money Matters

A popular song begins to hum from the folds of memory… ‘Money Money Money, It’s so funny in the Rich Man’s World’…

And yet, as this much repeated lyric of ABBA comes to mind, it strikes me that to part with this money, albeit for a good cause, requires not mere richness of wealth but Richness of Heart. For only those with a truly pure soul can come forth to staunchly support a noble cause.

Take, for example, the sponsors of an event with a social cause. Whether it is Idea’s Noble initiative to donate the proceeds of an hour’s talktime to mark 26/11 or Tata Tea’s Jaago Re campaign to promote the duty to vote, unless these enterprises had the true empathy for compatriots, they would never have come upon these brainwaves.

Some might say that these are a wonderful forum to establish a brand. Others might add that this is only wise investment in advertising, nothing but Corporate Social Responsibility commercialized. But nothing can eliminate the mass impact it had on India as a whole. So, they get a few freebies for spending big bucks on promoting a cause. But don’t they always say one good turn deserves another? Sponsorship for social events is more than just materialism in business.

When we go out to get sponsorship for SwarTantra, whether we obtain funds and brand partnerships successfully every time is immaterial. What matters more, I think, is that we are lighting another candle from PRC’s flame. The cause that has become so close to our hearts is reaching so many more in this bid to enlist sponsorships. What more can we hope for, except that some of us will be as touched by the courage of our soldiers as we are?

Language of the Soul...

Take a deep breath. Slowly exhale. Take a deep breath once more. Now relax your mind. If you’re into Yoga, you’ll realise what I’m getting at. After all, everyone needs to unwind and break off from mundane routines, and meditation and yoga provide all the rejuvenation you need. And yet, there’s something more inspiring, more refreshing, requiring little or no effort – music…

Music has been famously termed as the language of the soul. One inspired soul composes, another inspired soul imbibes. Genres of music are as varied as the tastes of the audiences, and while the lyrics of heavy metal have the power to stir the emotions of some, others may be soothed by the lilting notes of classical ragas like Malkauns or Yaman. Light music, jazz, semi classical or folk, whatever be your taste in song, it seldom happens that melody does not capture your heart.

And once that connect is in place, that’s all that’s needed for one heart to talk to another. Where words fall insufficient to convey feelings, tunes come in handy. And that’s exactly what we attempt to do this 24th January 2010. The feeling of patriotism is such a vast ocean that no boundary of mere words is enough to engulf it. But trust the song waves to reach out to India and express eloquently our pride in our Constitution. Only music can establish this direct, unbreakable, unshakable connect between us and the Paraplegic Soldiers in whose honour we hold this event.

SwarTantra aims at collecting funds in aid of the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre Kirkee. Let us join hands and pledge our devotion to these soldiers, to our Constitution, to INDIA.

What’s in a Name? Everything…

What’s in putting up a show, you ask? We reply with a similar question… What’s not in putting up a show? For indeed, taking care of all aspects that go into event production is a long learning process that is replete with choc-o-bloc excitement, fun and a whole lot of memories that you can treasure.

The first phase of SwarTantra is now over. We have identified a strong cause, we have fixed a budget, we are welcoming sponsors. The documents are being worked on, the specifications are being finalized and the detailing is receiving a sound polishing. And to top it all, we have a name – without which the first chapter of event production cannot close.

Oh yes! Hitting upon a name you like is quite a task, though it might not so appear. Even when a nouvelle mother is waiting to christen her new born, there are so many factors racing through her mind. The meaning, the spelling and so much more. So, naturally, when an event becomes your brainchild, giving it a name is forging its identity.

Our SwarTantra is a tribute. It is an event for a cause, and it aims at raising enough funds to help the Paraplegic soldiers recuperate. While creating the SwarTantra identity, the christening is what posed maximum challenge. After all, not only was the name to be catchy and concise, but it was to speak volumes in just a few syllables. Above all, it was to be peppy, connecting and attractive for banners and hoardings. Only an inspired moment can give you a name that’s instantly carved in your hearts.

SwarTantra – a confluence of music and the Republic is a name that came to us in that one inspired moment.

Rising for a Cause

When patriotism reaches its zenith, soldiers are born. Pledging their lives for guarding the integrity of their motherlands is no game for the weak hearted, and the Indian Armed Forces are equipped with Lion’s courage, and will power to match.
PRC is an institution committed to the Rehabilitation of Defense Personnel with Spinal Cord Injuries. As an institution established to render post medical extended care for the Paraplegic soldiers who had pledged their lives for safeguarding India, the facilities they provide their inmates with are truly commendable.
Not only do they endeavour to provide these soldiers with recuperation amenities and services like the much needed physiotherapy, but they also train them in various vocations. With incredible medical services, and vocational guidance to begin anew on their career paths, PRC ensures that there can be no better place to recuperate.This enables the inmates of PRC to successfully stand on their own feet again, helping them to provide for their lives with competence, capability and confidence.Not just that, PRC have fortified their infrastructure to help these soldiers enjoy sports that can be played by wheelchair borne people, keeping alive the spirit of adventure and sportsmanship that is so intrinsic to every soldier.
Here, they aspire to reinstate the zest for life in these disabled soldiers, who have been true patriots for our motherland.
In their honour, Continuum Solutions in collaboration with A3 Events brings forth a musical fund raiser, SwarTantra.

Music from the heart

Music, they say, flows straight from the heart. Music has the power to communicate what mere words cannot; music has the potential to talk to the very soul. Every note has a distinct appeal, every swara tells you something new.

When this music talks in the emotional language of the Rasas, be it the Karun Rasa or the Veer Rasa, the audience is mesmerized by the sheer purity of the emotion. And when this emotion translates to a patriotic crescendo, that’s when Indian music can truly pay a tribute to our beloved soldiers, who shall remain immortal in the memory of India.

SwarTantra... a prelude to our tribute

From 1950, India has been a Republic. We are a people united by a strong thread of fraternity, bestowed upon us by our constitution. And there are people out there who are guarding our frontiers day after day, night after night.

Our nation has risen in its global prestige. Many have inflicted blow after blow on India’s unblemished countenance, and yet, our soldiers have crafted her destiny to conquer her fate. Our constitution declares us as sovereign, our soldiers keep us so. And this selfless patriotism will always spark a fresh bout of appreciation from India, come the national days!

On this 24th January 2010, Continuum Solutions, in collaboration with A3 Events, is organizing SwarTantra, a musical fiesta with national maestros performing for the glory of India. Conducted in aid of the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre in Kirkee and the honour of our glorious Constitution that passes on as a legacy every Republic Day, this event is scheduled to take place in Pune on that Sunday evening.

Inspired by the music that has been an integral part of our legendary Freedom struggle, we have identified the cohesion between national fervor and swaras, leading us to christen our event SwarTantra.
